Insider Tip: Furniture doesn’t always have to come from the same set. Not only is mismatched furniture completely acceptable, but eclectic furniture gives the feel of being collected over time. So long “matchy matchy”, hello personality and character! The Taos Lifestyle Design Team has put together five fabulous tips on how to create a room that is unique and 100% you!
- Choose a Central Color
When working with furniture from different brands or collections, it’s important to decide on a color to weave throughout the room to pull everything together. Accessories such as throw blankets and pillows are an easy way to visually connect your design. For example, if your sofa is brown and your chairs have contrasting color and fabric in tones of blue, add blue throw pillows onto your sofa (don’t be afraid to combine textures and patterns). Include splashes of your central color throughout the room to tie in your varied pieces without looking “forced”.
- Set the Scale
When you arrange different styles together, it’s so important to make sure the scale is correct. Despite the variety of furniture types, the sizing and proportions need to be consistent. For example, an oversized chair paired with a petite sofa will overpower the room. Incorrect sizing will undermine the overall feel and impression of a room.
- Feature a Stand Out Piece
Furniture variety naturally delivers interest in a room. Do you have a favorite piece of furniture that’s stored away because it doesn’t match anything? A distinctive standout piece mixed into a furniture set radiates instant character. For example, that vintage armoire or antique cedar chest breaks up the uniform setting, adds charm, and creates a “lived in” atmosphere.
- Use a Rug to Soften the Contrast Between Finishes
Area rugs help to blend and soften your assortment of furniture. Select a rug that integrates with all of your finishes. Rugs are an excellent focal point to anchor a room. For example, a striking statement rug comes across deliberate when mixed with unpretentious and understated mismatched furniture.
- Don’t Be Afraid to Break the Rules!
Last but not least, rules are made to be broken. Your home should reflect your personality. Quirky is just as ok as traditional. Work with what you’re drawn to and you’ll effortlessly create a space that feels less like a showroom and more like home sweet home.
