Mattress vs Mattress Topper – What’s right for you?

If you don’t think about your mattress much, you’re not alone. It doesn’t seem all that interesting at first glance. But once you start feeling achy when you get out of bed, or notice yourself sneezing every time you get into bed, it’s probably time to start thinking a bit more about where you sleep. More specifically, once you decide to make some upgrades to your sleeping situation, you need to think about whether you need a new mattress topper or a whole new mattress. 


You Should Buy a Mattress Topper If….

Your current mattress is in good condition. If you bought your mattress within the last few years, but it is just not as comfortable as you would like, this is the perfect time to buy a mattress topper. This gives you the chance to make your bed firmer or softer as needed, without making a major investment. If the discomfort is due to pain from fibromyalgia, arthritis, or similar health conditions, you can benefit from a thick topper made with organic materials.

If you notice you sneeze a lot every time you get into bed, you might be allergic to the material your mattress is made of, which could include polyester or down. You might even be sensitive to dust, mildew, and other bothersome substances hiding in your mattress. If you don’t have the money to run out and buy a new place to sleep, you can get a mattress topper that will shield you from dust mites, bugs, mold, and other toxins within your mattress.

Even if you are perfectly happy with the comfort of your mattress, you might want to add a topper just to protect it. After all, you don’t want to risk allowing your comfy mattress to be ruined! If you just need to protect the surface from spills or regular wear and tear, a waterproof topper should suffice.

You Should Buy a New Mattress If….

The one you currently sleep on seems to be falling apart. This is pretty typical after more than five years of use, so don’t feel badly if you notice some obvious wear and tear. This might include springs sticking out of the fabric, saggy spots, and random lumps. It all just means it’s time to start shopping for a new mattress, which should be easier than ever when you use our mattress buying guide.

And don’t let a mattress that still looks nice fool you! If you constantly wake up with aches and pains that you don’t have when you sleep somewhere else for the night, you probably need a new mattress. A topper could help this situation, but if your mattress is more than five years old anyway, it’s probably time to just buy a new one.

As you browse mattresses, take note of your specific needs. For example, if you want to relieve back pain when you sleep, there are several options available to you. Memory foam is often recommended since it supports the spine, but I also recommend a new, good innerspring with good padding or a hybrid (springs and combo of latex and or memory foam). Similarly, latex mattresses are known for being firm and offering lots of back support. If your main concern is your allergies to dust or sensitivities to chemicals, choosing organic bedding may be your best bet.

On the other hand, if you don’t have any preferences when it comes to your bedding, an innerspring mattress might be right for you. Since this is the considered the classic choice, you should easily find a wide selection, all at affordable prices. That makes this option ideal when you are on a budget and can’t decide if you should buy a mattress or simply a mattress topper!
